Telstra recently announced its Next G network upgrade recently, taking the theoretical maximum speed of the network from 14.4Mbps to 21Mbps in Australia's major cities with typical download speeds of 550kps to 8Mbps within 21Mbps coverage areas and 550 kbps to 3 Mbps in other coverage areas. The Telstra Turbo 21 USB modem is the first device capable of taking advantage of the upgraded network speeds.
Telstra's Next G network, provides 3G and wireless broadband coverage to 99 per cent of the Australian population. The peak rated upload speed is 1.9 Mbps with typical upload speeds of 300 kbps to 1 Mbps. The Turbo 21 USB modem features upgradeable upload speed (expected 5.8 Mbps peak rating in future).
The required software for the Elite comes on the included CD. The software is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP and Vista however it's not compatible with Mac OS. The wireless connection manager is easy to use, with a visual indication of signal strength and of the amount of data sent and received.
The modem is made by Sierra and is model USB306 for the Telstra Mobile Broadband version and USB306bp for the BigPond version. The modem itself has a connection for an to be plugged in.
The BigPond 21 USB Mobile Card includes a microSD slot and a 1GB microSD memory card. Doubling as a USB memory drive and allowing users take documents, photos and data wherever they take their USB mobile card.

Next G coverage depends in part on where you are, what particular device you are using and whether your device has an and patch lead attached.
Currently the BigPond 21 USB Mobile Card has a recommended retail price of $399 and is available on all current in-market BigPond wireless broadband plans. Eligible Telstra customers can take advantage of the BigPond Wireless Broadband Offer which includes half the monthly access fees for the first 12 months when signing up to a 36 month plan, and a device rebate.
The turbo 21 (Telstra Mobile Broadband) is available on 24-month plans: $39 per month for a 400MB data allowance, or $59 per month with a 1GB data allowance there are also plans with greater data allowances. Both plans come with a $299 up-front cost or alternatively the Turbo 21 Modem will cost $499 if you decide to purchase it outright.
