Share

3 November 2009: Sony Ericsson has lifted the covers off its first Android-powered handset.

The Xperia X10 will be available in Australia in Q1 2010, with pricing being announced closer to the launch date.

The Handset

The first Android device from Sony Ericsson is Xperia X10. It packs punch via via the following: 1GHz Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm, a 4-inch capacitive touch display featuring 854 x 480 pixel resolution, 8.1 megapixel camera with LED flash.

The Xperia runs Android 1.6 with Sony Ericsson's uniquely designed interface shell that has two components which Sony Ericsson names Timescape and Mediascape.

Timescape unifies all of your different methods of messaging under a single contact heading, so all of your missed and placed calls, SMS, emails, Facebook and Twitter messages appear when you select the contact from the menu system. It's all there and can be filtered by source or by person. This is certain to make interacting with your friends and contacts more organized and manageable across all forms of communications. Timescape also utilizes tagged images of this contact from a variety of sources.

Mediascape promises to be an excellent multimedia application by unifying all of the media stored on the phone into one centralised location. There are tabs for music, videos and photos. Mediascape will also make song suggestions on the basis of the song you're listening to or stuff it has discovered your friends like via their communications with you.

With the 8.1-megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone socket and bundled 8GB microSD card you have a very appealing media package.

There's face recognition as well which recognizes up to five faces in a picture and automatically connects them with your social phonebook and other communications with that person. You are able to call that person by simply tapping on their face when viewing a picture.

The X10 also features aGPS for geotagging, Bluetooth AD2DP, WiFi, Microsoft Exchange Active sync, Speaker Phone, USB connectivity, Organiser, Media player and much more.
