The Samsung Galaxy S9+ came out in Australia on the 16th March 2018. While the Galaxy S9+ looks like the previous S9+ model, there are some differentiating features. Improvements in speed and performance and the camera are big pluses. Another significant change is the placement of the fingerprint button from next to the camera to just below the camera. This change will stop the camera lens getting dirty and help people to reach the button on a more substantial sized phone.
Features
For the Samsung Galaxy S9+, the most prominent feature to speak of is the rear camera. This camera is a dual camera with 12 MP with two aperture settings. The two aperture settings are a first for a smartphone, with most models only able to use a single aperture. Low-light environments will not cause issues with image clarity and colour, with improvements made in image quality.
There is expandable storage of up to 400 GB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack remains on the device. Bixby, Samsung’s assistant, can use the camera for live language translation. Video can be shot in super slow motion, and Animojis are there for fun and giggles.
Specs
In Australia, the system-on-chip is the Exynos 9810 with an Exynos octa-core 4x2.8 GHz and 4x1.7 GHz processor. Memory is 6GB of RAM. For the battery, this is a 3500 mAh that is non-removable. The display is 2960x1440 1440p Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen Infinity Display. Sound comes through stereo speakers tuned by AKG, and Dolby Atmos surround sound.
The rear camera is a Dual 12 MP with two aperture settings – f/1.5 and f/2.4. Video capabilities are Dual OIS, 4K at 30 or 60 fps, QHD at 30 fps, 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, 720p at 30 fps. The front camera is 8 MP with an aperture of f/1.7 and autofocus.
Available sizes and colours
You can get the Galaxy S9+ with storage capacities of 64, 128 or 256GB. The colour range includes Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, and Coral Blue.
Accessories
On to accessories now, and one of the first decisions you can make is what case to get. There are so many cases available you should consider what you need. Maybe you can get away with a cheaper, thinner case that will protect your phone in everyday use. Alternatively, if you think you will need more protection, get a bigger case that can improve things like water and dust resistance.
Battery life can have improvements from a powerbank. Stop your phone from running out of power during the day and be aware that when you buy a powerbank the more massive the capacity, the more charge it can hold. Some powerbanks charge faster than others, so consider that when making your purchase. A couple of spare cables do not go astray, maybe one for your work, one for your car and a spare one at home. If you want to go a bit further, get a Qi Wireless charger to go cord-free and charge your phone quickly and easily.
Sound can come from a nice pair of headphones if the standard headphones are not up to your standards. Due to the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack, there is no being forced into use wireless earbuds or an adapter. However, if you want wireless Bluetooth headphones, go right ahead and get some. For sound around the home, consider a Bluetooth speaker, or a couple of them for the surround sound experience.
When in the car, an in-car charger is a big plus. So is a phone cradle, and these come in different forms. Some cradles stick to your windshield; others sit on the air conditioner vent while other go into the cigarette lighter. A Bluetooth kit can be put into your car to make it Bluetooth compatible for handsfree usage.
For something a little bit special, consider a Samsung Dex. The Dex is excellent as it makes your phone a desktop computer just by being connected to a monitor or TV. For this accessory, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can enhance the experience significantly.
