ESD Safe Duratech Temperature Controlled Soldering Station

The Soldering Pencil:

Firstly, it uses a solid metal multipole connector with threaded collar to attach to the power unit/controller. The pencil itself is tethered by a generous length of silicone rubber sheathed cord. Why silicone rubber? Two reasons: 1. If the iron accidentally makes contact with it, it will not scorch. 2. It is very flexible and supple, enabling you to use the iron as if it was cordless! The pencil (iron) is very slim with a cool and soft silicone rubber heat shield. The cord entry is well grommeted to ensure that the cord will not break at the critical entry point. The slim handle belies the fact that the pencil has a beefy 60 watt thermal capacity. The heater itself is a state-of-the-art Japanese made ceramic heater with professional grade P.T.C. thermistor/sensor feedback element. The sensor is located in such a position that tip temperature is closely tracked, resulting in low hysterisis time (the time from when the tip is cooled - from the application of solder for example - to when power is applied to the heater element to compensate for the loss). The plated and factory pre-tinned tip is hollow and fits right over the heating element. This is a much more efficient heating system than tip change/temp change soldering irons which transfer heat to the tip via a narrow collar. Whilst it is not necessary to change the tip to change the temp of the iron in this product, this product shares the stainless steel tip holding sleeve system which is a great feature of that other iron!

The Control Unit/Power Station:

The first thing you notice is the robust nature of the case. It is solid. The case has a stainless steel tray for spare tip storage and a well for a wiping sponge (supplied). The station on/off switch is tucked away at the side so it does not clutter the front panel. The main temp control goes from 150 - 450°C. Frankly this is really a little too broad for soldering, but that's what you get. Once set, the temp remains within an amazing +/- 3°C of setting. You can actually mechanically lock the knob setting with an allen key (supplied). The knob won't move! After that, there's a pilot red LED showing power being applied to the heater and when not heating, reverts to green to tell you the iron is at set temp. There is a front panel screwdriver slot for calibration which we recommend that you leave alone as the iron is factory calibrated. It's just there if it is ever needed... We will be supporting this product with spares, etc. so you may safely choose this product for production use.
