Microsoft Lumia 640

Lumia 640The Lumia 640 is one of the first smartphones to be released as a Microsoft branded smartphone (Nokia has been absorbed into Microsoft), and the 640 will be the first smartphone to be upgraded to Windows 10. The Microsoft Lumia 640 is available in black, white, glowing orange or powder blue and is a smartphone that runs Windows 8.1 operating system. Windows 10 operating system will reportedly bring a deluge of Android and iOS apps to the WIndows Phone ecosystem because Microsoft is making it very easy for developers to port their existing apps over to the Windows Phone environment.

The Lumia 640 has a 5 inch full HD screen that shows bright colours and has a crisp, clear, clean picture quality. The handset has a nice ergonomic feel to it with Microsoft having positioned the power and volume buttons in comfortable locations. This Windows mobile smartphone has a snappy interface, that belies its budget price tag of just $299. This phone shows that you don’t need to spend a lot of money in order to have for a good, functional handset although the lower price does mean that you sacrifice a few features. The price of this phone includes a 12 month subscription to Microsoft Office 365, which is normally worth about $90 on its own so buyers get more value from out of the deal phone from the start. The Lumia 640 uses a microSIM and is a 4G handset so web browsing and downloading of apps while you are on the go will be 4G fast.

The Lumia 640 has a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU or processor and comes with 1GB of RAM. These specs put the device on par with competing budget Android smartphones. While this handset is not as quick as high end smartphones, it is by no means a sluggish phone, however processor intensive tasks such as rendering 3D graphics in games isn’t fantastic.

The 640’s WiFi does not support 5GHz wireless, only the 2.4GHz standard and again this should not be a problem for users of this device.

The option to expand your storage via microSD is also welcome, especially considering how quickly the 8GB of built-in space fills up. The Lumia 640 has 8GB memory with 3.4GB being free out of the box. The memory can be increased as the 640 will happily accept a microSD card which is something we would recommend, especially for photos.

The Lumia 640’s battery life is good with over 10 hours of video playback during testing from the 2500 milliamp-hour battery.

With Windows 10 just around the corner it’s not a bad time to purchase a Windows Phone, and as far as they go the Lumia 640 is a bargain. The Lumia 640 is one of the best budget smartphone purchases you can currently. Sure there are some features sacrificed and limitations in this phone but not nearly as many, nor as big, as you may have expected.
