Samsung and Google Cloud have announced a groundbreaking partnership, aiming to bring generative artificial intelligence (AI) to the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. This partnership marks the first time Google Cloud’s Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 will be deployed on Vertex AI and delivered via the cloud to smartphone devices.
The announcement was made during the Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, California, where the Galaxy S24 series was unveiled. Janghyun Yoon, Corporate EVP and Head of Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the shared vision between Google and Samsung of making technology more accessible and beneficial for all.
Gemini Pro, a multimodal AI model, can understand, operate, and combine different types of information including text, code, images, and video. It will initially be integrated into Samsung-native applications, enabling features such as summarization across Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard.
In addition to Gemini Pro, the Galaxy S24 series will also feature Imagen 2, Google’s most advanced text-to-image diffusion technology. This technology, developed by Google DeepMind, will provide users with safe and intuitive photo-editing capabilities within the device’s Gallery application.
Samsung is not just stopping at Gemini Pro and Imagen 2. The tech giant is also testing Gemini Ultra, Google’s most capable model for highly-complex tasks. Plus, the S24 series will also employ Gemini Nano, an on-device Language Learning Model (LLM) delivered as part of the Android 14 operating system.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, noted the immense potential of generative AI in creating meaningful mobile experiences. He believes that through this collaboration, Samsung’s developers can leverage Google Cloud’s infrastructure, performance, and flexibility to deliver safe, reliable, and engaging AI-powered applications on Samsung smartphone devices.
