Telstra now has online coverage maps for the Next G networks sea coverage that can extend 20 to 70 kilometres out to sea from mobile base stations on the coast. These maps cover areas such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays and the Sydney to Melbourne coast.
In addition to phone calls, the Next G network’s high speed mobile broadband data capability gives access a wide range of important marine services such as: tide information, weather reports, maps, shipping information, email as well as voice calls.
However Telstra states that boat owners should continue to have on their vessels appropriate emergency communications equipment and should not rely upon public mobile phone networks for this purpose.
Variables like the tides, swell and other weather conditions as well as antenna installation can significantly impact on coverage and performance.
To maximise your coverage when out at sea, you should use an external antenna, that is omnidirectional that is mounted as high as possible on your vessel.
