Oppo Reno 5G And Reno 10X Zoom Phones Available Now

Australia has received its second 5G phone in the country with the Oppo Reno 5G. Releasing alongside the powerful, speedy 5G phone is the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom which is essentially the same phone without the 5G capability. The only difference between the two are that the 5G model contains the Qualcomm’s X55 modem that gives it its 5G capabilities. The 5G costs $1,499 and the 10x Zoom is available for $1,199. Both models are available in either jet black or ocean green in Australia. They are available on contract from Telstra (Reno 5G), Telechoice and Woolworths Mobile (10X Zoom).

With both phones being the same in every other way, we will now just focus on the Oppo Reno 5G in particular.

Reno 5G And 10X Zoom

Oppo Reno 5GWhile the Reno 5G is expected to be cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, it also has been clocked at downloading speeds exceeding 1.9Gbps, 600Mbps faster than the S10 5G. It is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and comes available with either 6 or 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage with up to an extra 256 GB external storage. The operating system is ColorOS 6.0 and is based off of Android 9.0.

As for the make-up of the phone, the Reno 5G is a hefty phone, measuring out at 162 x 77.2 x 9.3mm. Along with the bigness of the phone comes some weight as well. The Reno 5G weighs in at 215g. Missing from the phone is a headset jack, 3D Face Unlock (but does have Fingerprint Unlock), wireless charging, and no water-resistance.

Rear Camera

The camera is where the 10x Zoom name comes into play. The Reno 5G features a 48 MP main camera combined with a 13MP telephoto lens and 8MP wide-angle lens that make up the tri-lens setup. According to the official Oppo website, “By combining three lenses over different focal ranges, this achieves a full bandwidth of 16-160mm, an effective focal length 10 times that of an ultra wide-angle lens. The tri-camera setup complemented by dual OIS for ensuring stability even when fully zoomed on hand-held operation.” With the 10x zoom in capacity of the Reno 5G, you can bring far away objects up and close in your photos with very clear quality.

O-Dot

The back of the Oppo Reno has a bump or nub near the rear camera. This is a raised little bump that sticks out at the back of the handset. This bit is a small, round protruding nub that has been put there to lift the phone and by doing this it provides protection for the device’s camera lens which is a great idea but apparently there are other uses for this nub. According to Gizmodo’s Teagan Jones, rubbing the nub or O-Dot as Oppo aptly name it, can be a welcome distraction for repetitive fidgeters and can apparently be somewhat habit forming. Maybe a kind of 2019 fidget spinner?

Front Camera

As for the front facing camera, it is hidden in a unique spot. Looking at the front of the phone you would not normally see the camera in the usual spots that most smartphones keep it. The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom phones keep the 16MP front facing camera and the LED flashes for both sides in a “shark fin” pop-up. You simply press a button and the fin raises and lowers within a second.

Display

The AMOLED screen is 6.6 inches diameter, puts out 1080 x 2340 resolution, and takes up 93.1% of the front of the phone. The back of the phone has an extra layer of glass covering it so it is supposed to be as flat as possible and adds more protection for the rear facing triple cameras.

Battery

The 4,065mAh battery tends to last for about a day without needing a charge. According to TechRadar’s review on the phone, they were able to watch a 90 minute video with Wi-Fi on, max brightness, and accounts syncing in the background with only a drop from 100% to 91% battery life. To ensure the device does not overheat, it utilizes cooling gel, triple graphite layering and copper pipes to manage the device’s temperature effectively.

Performance

For the gamers who get these phones, the Oppo Reno 5G and 10x Zoom features frame by frame optimization called Game Boost 2.0. It focuses on latency and control issues, analysing touch control and refresh rate leading to a smoother experience for any game you are playing. According to the official website this tech allows the phones to increase frame rate stability by more than 30% and also reduce the chance for lag by 44%.

Cases And Accessories

Accessory and case wise both the Reno 5G (see them here) and the 10x Zoom (click here to see more) are well covered by a range of cases, covers as well as car kits, chargers and cradles.
