Vodafone’s New 3G 850MHz Network

Vodafone is upgrading its network to provide improved coverage and improve signal strength and faster data speeds for current and new customers. The Vodafone network upgrade involves rolling out a new network and this new 3G network will run on 850MHz technology. Vodafone will also continue to use its current 2100 MHz and 900 MHz frequencies and network.

Vodafone is rolling out these upgrades in major metropolitan areas first as it’s in these areas where Vodafone experiences a majority of network traffic. Adding 850MHz capability increases the overall coverage capability of Vodafone’s existing network. 850MHz will complement Vodafone’s existing network, so all existing and new customers will benefit.

Currently Vodafone’s 850MHz is only available in selected metropolitan areas of Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth and the 850 network will continue to be expanded throughout 2011.
The new network is designed to deliver improved call quality with less calls ‘dropping out’ and quicker data speeds, mobile broadband devices or modems as well as improved data speeds from tablets and smartphones.

The 850MHz frequency will provide numerous of advantages. Better in building coverage will be a benefit due to the lower frequency of 850MHz being able to better penetrate through buildings and other obstacles.

This improved signal strength means better call reception and will mean that data can be transmitted at faster speeds due to increased signal strength.

Where it’s available it should also lead to improvements in coverage including better indoor coverage and signal strength if you have an 850 MHz compatible device.

If you have a handset or modem that’s 850MHz compatible and you are within an 850MHz coverage area it should mean a better experience and faster data speeds.

However Vodafone says that current customers who have devices that are not 850 MHz compatible should see improvements as well due to the fact that that some existing load on the current (2100 MHz and 900 MHz) frequencies will be eased as overall network traffic will be split between the 850, 900 and 2100 MHz frequencies.

So for current customers even if the new network is rolled out to the suburb next to you it should make a difference because the extra capacity due to the new 850 MHz frequency network will help shoulder the load across the surrounding areas.

Current Vodafone mobiles that are 850MHz compatible are: iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S2, iPhone 3GS, Nokia C3 Touch & Type, Nokia E7, Nokia N8, Nokia X3-02. Current mobile broadband devices are: Vodafone Mega Modem K4511, Vodafone Standard Modem K3771.

Vodafone has also launched their Mobile Broadband Satisfaction Trial whereby, to put it simply, if you’re not happy with your Vodafone coverage, you can cancel your service within 30 days and you’ll only pay for what you’ve used. We will cover this in more detail shortly.
