Nokia Lumia 800

The Nokia Lumia 800 is Nokia’s first Windows Mobile 7 smartphone that has a 1.4GHz CPU, 16GB of onboard memory and 512MB of RAM

Externally the Lumia 800 is very similar to the Nokia N9, with the Lumia 800 having a design constructed from a polycarbonate that has a stiff, rubberised look and feel that gives the Lumia 800 a durable feel to the device.

The Lumia 800 has an  3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen with Nokia’s ClearBlack, a technology that makes the screen easier to see when outdoors and provides crisp, striking colours when inside and out. The camera of the Lumia 800 is an 8-megapixel device with Carl Zeiss lense. The camera has a quick shot ability so you can go from pocket to photo then to Facebook in a matter of seconds.

The Lumia 800 comes with Windows Phone 7 and has the Mango update already installed. Windows phone 7 is an easy to use operating system that has Live tiles that show you what’s happening in your upcoming appointments, your social networks, and any apps you have running. Updates from Facebook and Twitter are pulled together and displayed on your home screen. This software iteration also introduces hardware-accelerated web browsing through Internet Explorer 9 Mobile, allowing the device to effortlessly handle heavy HTML5 pages, high-definition streaming portals.

Viewing, adding and editing contacts is a breeze and sms and emailing is oh so easy. Being a Microsoft product the device will easily sync with you Windows live or hotmail accounts. Also Skydrive is included that allows you to store media in the cloud for extra storage and backups should your handset ever be lost or stolen.

Windows Phone 7 also has Microsoft Office Mobile, which will allow you to create everything from Word and Excel to PowerPoint documents, letting you be productive when you’re out and about

Nokia has included with the Lumia 800 its GPS, Nokia Drive which gives turn-by-turn voice navigation combined with Nokia Maps to give you mobile navigation.

Charging Your Nokia Lumia 800

The Lumia 800 uses a standard Micro-USB port tucked under a small flap on the top edge. You don’t need anything fancy to keep it topped up.

What you’ll need

• A 5V / 1A USB A wall adapter (that’s 5 watts). The original model was Nokia’s AC-16.
• Any standard Micro-USB cable (the kind used by most Android phones and older devices).

Good to know

• Any standard 5V USB phone charger will work fine, even if it’s a different brand.
• Avoid USB-C chargers, they use a different shape and won’t fit without an adapter, and using one directly can damage the port.
• If you’re in a pinch, plugging the Micro-USB cable into a computer’s USB port also works, though it may charge slower.

Lumia 800 Discontinuation

The Lumia 800 went on sale in Australia in March 2012. There was never a single “goodbye” date, carriers and retailers simply stopped stocking it as the year went on. By 2013, most stores had switched over to newer Windows Phone 8 models like the Lumia 820 and 920. So, there’s no official retirement announcement to look up, it just quietly faded away as newer phones took its place.
