No, not all Microsoft Surface devices use the exact same charger. Compatibility depends on the model generation, port type and power requirements.
Most Surface Pro, Surface Laptop and Surface Book models use a proprietary magnetic connector. Chargers with this connector come in different wattages: 24W, 39W, 44W, 65W, 102W and 127W. You can physically connect any magnetic Surface charger to a compatible device, but using a lower-wattage charger than required will result in slow charging or no charging while the device is in use. For example, a 44W charger plugged into a device designed for 127W will only charge when the screen is off.
Many newer Surface models support USB-C Power Delivery (PD). To charge properly, the USB-C adapter must output at least 45W to 60W, depending on the specific model. Common USB-C wattages are 45W, 65W, 95W and 100W or higher for devices like gaming-focused models.
In summary: you can safely interchange chargers within the magnetic Surface Connect family, but match or exceed the device’s recommended wattage for proper charging. For USB-C models, use a compatible PD adapter with sufficient power output. Older devices require their specific, no-longer-standard connectors.
Microsoft Surface Chargers have two connection types: the magnetic Surface Connect or the versatile USB-C. Wattage options range from 24W to 127W, depending on your Surface model. Some of our Surface adapter bricks include an additional built-in USB-A or USB-C port for charging your phone or other devices simultaneously.
