Oppo's new A52 smartphone is the company's latest addition to the now all too common midrange battle. Retailing at a price of $299 AUD, the A52 has a good specs sheet for a phone in its price range. Nonetheless, you won't get a near flagship like experience due to a few setbacks in some aspects of the phone. Here's a detailed review of the Oppo A52.
Design And Display
Weighing 192 grams and with dimensions of 162mm x 75.5mm x 8.9mm, the phone is pretty large. What stands out when looking at the front of the A52 is the large 6.5” LCD and the tight bezels. The biggest smiling point of the phone’s display is its full HD resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. Sticking to the front, the A52 has a non-obstructive hole-punch camera cutout on the top left side. The phone also comes with a default screen protector, which provides the screen with added protection. However, this makes the hole punch seem larger than it is.
The A52 has a glossy plastic back, which easily picks up fingerprint grime. The Quad cam setup at the back gives the phone a notable bump that makes it wobble when placed on a flat surface. The bump is easily solved by the case that accompanies the phone.
What Colours Is The Oppo A52 Available In
Oppo's A52 smartphone is available in two colours; Twilight Black and Stream White.
Camera
The camera is easily the main talking point in any Oppo phone. The A52 has a single 16MP front sensor, and a rear quad-cam set up: a 12MP main sensor + 8MP Ultra wide + 2MP Macro + 2MP depth sensor. The lenses are accompanied by quite some features, including AI beautification for the front sensor, 4K recording, night mode, video stabilization, and a slow-motion feature at 120fps.
Nonetheless, there are a few issues with the camera. For instance, the night mode is less than impressive in extremely low light. The lenses also have slow shutter speeds, presenting a challenge when shooting fast-moving objects. The lack of a default macro shooting mode means that you have to rely on the AI to switch to the macro lens before taking a shot. Overall though, the camera experience on the A52 is above average.
Memory And Performance
The A52 has a 4GB RAM and a decent 64GB ROM. The ROM is surprisingly only expandable by a mere 16GB, but 64GB ROM should be enough for any average user. The phone runs on Color 0S 7.1, which is based on Android 10 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset which is normally saved for mid-tier phones.
The chipset isn't the fastest available in mid-range smartphones, but will still give you decent performance in your daily usage. There is also a Hyper boost performance engine if you desire a smoother gaming experience.
Battery
The battery stands at a whopping 5000mAH and will easily last an average user two days. For a heavy user, the battery life is significantly lower but still quite fair. This is partly due to the power-friendly processor used. The A52 has dark mode and eye care mode that help increase the battery life.
What Type of Charger Does the Oppo A52 Have
The Oppo A52 comes with an 18W USB C fast charger. This will charge from 0 to 50 per cent in 45 minutes.
Oppo A52 Availability In Australia
Australian preorders for the Oppo A52 commenced on April 30th 2020 and was available for sale on May 11th 2020. This phone is available from Woolworths Mobile, Kogan, Officeworks, The Good Guys, MobileCiti and other retailers.
Verdict
Despite its apparent shortcommings, the strengths of the phone stand out and will give you overall decent experience. Anyone looking for a phone within a 300-dollar budget should consider the A52 if they want value for their money.
